“What we see going on in America is the collective heart of America on display.”
God gave me that word several years ago and it remains true today. It will continue to remain true until people who identify themselves as Christians in America stop making wealth and the pursuit of worldly things their primary goal in life and instead begin living the lives they were born to live. “What is that life? What is that purpose”, you might ask? Put simply, we exist to bear fruit.
The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.” -Luke 3:9
“I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. -John 15:1-2
“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. -John 15:5-6
7 If you remain in Me and My words remain in you [that is, if we are vitally united and My message lives in your heart], ask whatever you wish and it will be done for you. 8 My Father is glorified and honored by this, when you bear much fruit, and prove yourselves to be My [true] disciples. -John 15:7-8
“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” -John 13:34-35
Often times when I share this message with believers, they willingly admit that they aren’t as focused on loving others and bearing fruit as they should be. They admit that they aren’t “all in” and recognize that they are the seed Jesus talked about in Matthew 13:22. Jesus said, “The seed falling among the thorns refers to someone who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, making it unfruitful.” The question that almost always follows after this realization is, “what do I need to do differently?”
The world we live in is busy. All of us have many demands on our time and living “sold out” for God every day is hard. The busyness of life makes it challenging to love and serve others – to bear fruit- but Jesus gives us the answer in John 15:4.
4 Dwell in Me, and I will dwell in you. [Live in Me, and I will live in you.] Just as no branch can bear fruit of itself without abiding in (being vitally united to) the vine, neither can you bear fruit unless you abide in Me.
The only way that any of us can live the lives we were born to live is to be vitally united to Jesus. As Christians, we cannot continue to live for ourselves and be satisfied living a “mostly moral” or “better than most” kind of life. It is time for Christians to awaken from their apathy and begin to live for God. Jesus tells us all throughout the New Testament that we exist to do the same work that He did. The Father puts opportunities in front of us every day to make a difference in someone’s life. Don’t worry about tomorrow…just go make a difference in someone’s life today…tomorrow will take care of itself.
